Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming how we approach various aspects of life. Many people rely on ChatGPT, for example, to plan a holiday, land their dream job, or even pass standardised exams. But can this tool extend its reach to international relocation?
As an experiment, we asked ChatGPT to help us with a relocation from Cape Town to Melbourne. Let’s evaluate its response.
Prompt:
How can I relocate successfully from Cape Town to Melbourne, once I have a visa, what do I do?
ChatGPT response:
Once you have obtained a visa to relocate from Cape Town to Melbourne, there are several steps you can take to ensure a successful relocation:
- Plan your logistics: Determine your moving timeline and start organizing the logistics of your move. This includes researching moving companies, obtaining quotes, and scheduling the transportation of your belongings. Make sure to consider any customs regulations or restrictions for importing your possessions.
- Secure housing: Begin searching for suitable housing in Melbourne. You can utilize online real estate platforms, consult with real estate agents, or explore rental listings to find accommodation that fits your needs and budget. Consider factors such as location, proximity to amenities, and commuting options.
- Notify relevant parties: Inform important parties about your relocation, such as your employer, educational institution (if applicable), healthcare providers, banks, and utility companies. Set up mail forwarding or inform the post office of your change of address to ensure that you continue to receive important mail.
- Research healthcare and insurance: Familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Melbourne and determine the necessary steps to access healthcare services. If you have health insurance, check whether it provides coverage in Australia, or consider obtaining appropriate health insurance coverage for your time in Melbourne.
- Transfer finances: If you have bank accounts in Cape Town, inquire with your bank about the process of transferring funds to an Australian bank account or setting up an international banking solution. Research banking options in Melbourne and open an account if needed.
- Arrange for necessary documents: Gather and organize important documents such as your passport, visa, identification documents, academic records, and any other relevant certificates. Keep both physical and digital copies of these documents for easy access during your relocation.
- Research and comply with customs regulations: Familiarize yourself with the customs regulations and requirements for bringing personal belongings, including any restrictions or duties that may apply. Ensure that you comply with the necessary documentation and declarations when entering Australia.
- Connect with local communities: Reach out to social or professional networks in Melbourne to start building connections and familiarize yourself with the local community. This can help ease your transition and provide support as you settle into your new city.
- Settle in and explore: Once you arrive in Melbourne, take the time to settle into your new home, get acquainted with your surroundings, and explore the city. Familiarize yourself with public transportation, local amenities, and cultural attractions to make the most of your new environment.
It sounds straightforward, right? ChatGPT listed only nine steps. If only it were that easy!
The limitations of AI in relocation
While ChatGPT provided a valid overview of the steps, relocating to a new country can be complex. Let’s go back to its advice for logistics, for instance:
Determine your moving timeline and start organizing the logistics of your move. This includes researching moving companies, obtaining quotes, and scheduling the transportation of your belongings. Make sure to consider any customs regulations or restrictions for importing your possessions.
This answer is correct, but that’s not all there is to it.
For instance, it’s not enough to obtain quotes from a removalist and engage the cheapest services.
You have to make sure the moving company is certified by reputable accreditors such as the British Association of Removers (BAR) or the Fédération Internationale des Déménageurs Internationaux (FIDI). This certification ensures you can file a complaint with the accreditation body, which will investigate and provide a dispute resolution in case a problem arises.
Housing is another crucial aspect of relocation that you cannot delegate to online tools. Factors such as location, proximity to amenities, and commuting options can be researched online, but there are many others that you can’t.
Misleading online advertisements are a persistent issue in real estate. We’ve all encountered them—enticing photos that don’t quite capture reality or descriptions that gloss over potential problems.
We know by the address if a home is worth checking or not.
But even with truthful listings, a website can only convey a certain amount. For instance, a client asked us to inspect a beautiful house. Everything looked ideal, from sunlight entering each room to its proximity to public transportation.
Upon inspection, we immediately realised the real estate advert failed to mention one crucial detail: noise from the construction right across the street!
From the looks of it, it would go on for months. Imagine if our client relied on what’s posted on the website.
This experience is why the human touch is still irreplaceable. Yes, you can ask ChatGPT or any online tool you have for guidance, but verify it with experts who have the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding your specific circumstances.
At Plan4Australia, for instance, we leverage our local knowledge to help you shortlist homes so you don’t waste your time inspecting ten homes that are not in a good location.
We know by the address if a home is worth checking or not. We have a list of real estate agents we can trust and easily discern if photos on the internet have been photoshopped. We spend time doing this with you so you can plan your move smoothly.
How can AI improve relocation outcomes?
While relying solely on AI for international relocation might not be ideal, it can still help you improve your relocation experience in the following ways.
Help you analyse data
If you are comparing removalist quotes or the cost of living in different cities, AI can help you analyse data. It can sift through numerous quotes to identify hidden fees or discrepancies and present you with a clear comparison of the total costs involved.
In the context of the cost of living, AI can generate personalised reports highlighting the financial implications of living in different cities. These reports can empower you to make informed decisions about your relocation based on your specific budget and priorities.
Assist in packing and decluttering
AI cannot pack your bags for you per se, but if you’re struggling with packing your home for an international move, you can ask AI which belongings to keep, donate, or sell before your move.
AI can also suggest optimal packing techniques to maximise space and protect your belongings during transit. This suggestion can include recommendations for packing materials, labelling systems, and even the order in which you should pack your items.
Be a springboard for anything
Sometimes, we just don’t know where and how to start planning our relocation. We can ask AI for recommendations, checklists and guidance. For instance, if you’re looking for websites to find real estate listings, AI can provide you with one. Perhaps you’re looking for a community where you can connect with others when you land; AI can also help you find online forums or social groups that cater to your interests.
Just remember that these are starting points only. It’s always wise to cross-check with reliable resources to avoid any unpleasant surprises later on.
